Working Towards a Child Safety Action Plan for Wales 2007

During March 2007 Child Safe Wales approached Children in Wales to organise a series of workshops in North, West and South East Wales on the subject of Child Safety.

In order to ensure a joined up partnership approach to the issue, the help of the Child Accident Prevention Trust, ROSPA and CAPIC was enlisted.

The purpose of the workshops was to discuss the idea of having a Child Safety Action Plan for Wales, similar to that which was developed in Scotland and in 17 other European countries.

Professionals with a concern for child accident prevention were invited to join us to highlight the areas they felt should be prioritised in Wales. Professionals from a wide range of organisations attended including health visitors, Surestart teams, St John’s ambulance, Welsh Assembly Government, Local Health Boards, Housing Associations, Barnardos and so on.

The key issues under discussions were:
• What are the key accidental injury issues?
• How accident prevention work could be better funded and organised
• Government and local policies that impact on the work
• How to reduce variations in death and injury between the poorest and the wealthiest children
• How to raise the profile of the subject up the policy agenda. Whose agenda?

Basic notes from the workshops are available from Children in Wales and a fuller report will be made available in the near future. Presentations made on the day can be downloaded from the list below.
