WHO REPORTS ON CHILD INJURY NOW AVAILABLE!

The Injury Observatory for Britain and Ireland has welcomed the publication of two major reports which show the UK is leading the world on preventing injuries and deaths to children.
Reports about child injury prevention at a European and global level were published on 10th December by the World Health,Organisation’s (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and jointly by the WHO and UNICEF.
They reveal that the UK has one of the lowest child injury death rates in the world and that the lives of many thousands of children could be saved each year if other countries followed its lead.
But the reports also make it clear that the UK could do more, particularly in addressing the higher injury rates among children from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND EXPERT ARGUES WHO 'IGNORES' INJURY PREVENTION

The University of Queensland's Professor Alan Lopez argues that the World Health Organization (WHO) must allocate more funds to non-communicable diseases and injury prevention.

Writing in the November 1 issue of the UK-based journal, Professor Lopez, Head of UQ's School of Population Health said that WHO is making a "substantial over-investment in the control of communicable disease at the expense of injury prevention, funds for which are virtually non-existent". He said that injury caused 12-13 percent of the entire global burden of disease and injury yet received 1 percent of WHO's regular-budget and extra-budgetary (ie. donated, often by governments) contributions.

The Young People and Knife Crime Summit: Tackling Street Weapon Culture Through Partnership – 30th October 2008

More than fifty teenagers have died as a result of violent incidents in London alone in the past two years – with many of the victims succumbing to horrific knife attacks by other young people. The Government has responded with the Youth Crime Action Plan 2008, which was published in July, and aims to send out a strong and clear message to young people that violent crime in all its forms will no longer be tolerated. This major one-day national conference will provide a timely opportunity for local practitioners to assess the key objectives of the action plan in relation to tackling knife possession and reducing knife-related violence amongst young people.

CHILD SAFETY WEEK - 23rd - 29th June!

This year, Child Safety Week runs from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 June, with the theme:

“Make a change. Make a difference”

This years message is that even small changes in our everyday lives can make big differences to children’s safety.

For a parent or grandparent, this could mean driving more slowly in areas where children are out playing, getting their gas boiler serviced, fitting safety equipment such as smoke alarms or moving household cleaners where a young child can’t reach them.

For a child or young person, this could mean stopping at the kerb rather than running straight across the road, taking on the weekly job of checking that the smoke alarms are working or remembering not to overload electrical sockets in their room.

If you work with parents, carers, children or young people, we hope that Child Safety Week provides you with inspiration and resources to raise awareness of child accident prevention and run local activities and events.
